Spot the missing roof

Image
by Andrea Mulder-Slater My time in art school seems like it happened an eternity ago. Mostly because it's been an eternity since I attended art school. I love to make art, but I also love to write and I find that the words don't ever seem to flow at the same time as the paint. To give you an example, it took me approximately 17 and a half minutes to write that last sentence. In other words, here's what I've been up to lately... Did you spot the disappearing (and reappearing) roof? Artists are magicians. No, really.

Caked-on paint: stubborn love

Image
by Andrea Mulder-Slater I've been resting my writing muscle lately. Not by choice you understand, it's just worked out that way. I kind of feel as though the part of me that makes words appear, has wrapped itself up in tin foil and thrown itself on the $40 barbeque we picked up at a yard sale last month. I blame Geoff. Of course I do. The thing is -- while searching for buoys in the basement (this makes sense if you live with us), Geoff found my magic apron. Discovered in an abandoned garage more than 15 years ago, my magic apron is fully caked with paint, modeling paste, matte gel and god knows what else. Evidently - as soon as I put it on, my writing brain goes to sleep, but not before it injects my artmaking brain full of caffeine, or amphetamines. Whichever. The point is, this blog post is about art. Jan and I have been preparing for an exhibition of sorts which is taking place this summer and while I'm trying to maintain an air of mystery, I'm happy to ...

A couple of paintings...

Image
by Andrea Mulder-Slater When I'm not busy trying to be funny, I'm busy making art. Which reminds me... I have two little paintings (8" x 8") currently available for sale (hint, hint) on Etsy. Where the River Meets the Sea is an acrylic on canvas painting of the mouth of a river. The actual location is where the St. Croix River meets St. Andrews Harbour - Passamaquoddy Bay (part of the Bay of Fundy) in St. Andrews by-the-Sea. It can be yours for just $60. I know, right?! http://www.etsy.com/listing/116429849/where-the-river-meets-the-sea-acrylic Moody Weathered Lighthouse is an acrylic on canvas painting of a lighthouse. A really old lighthouse. The actualbuilding  is Pendlebury Light in St. Andrews by-the-Sea - prior to restoration. It too is only $60. What a steal. Seriously. http://www.etsy.com/listing/116428944/moody-weathered-lighthouse-acrylic?ref=v1_other_2 Thanks for looking. No, really.

I'm such a (coffee) charmer

Image
by Andrea Mulder-Slater Anyone who knows me knows how much I love coffee. In fact, I love it so much I once ended up with a holter monitor strapped to my body for several days to find out the source of my "heart problems." My symptoms were frightening -  and entirely preventable. I had palpitations, a buzzy vibrating feeling in my arms, full body jitters and an impending sense of doom. "You really should cut down on the coffee," was the medical advice I received. My doctor was right. Fortunately, I became pregnant not much later and my coffee addiction was brought under control as I made a pact with myself not to imbibe any caffeine while with child. That's when my coffee painting really gained momentum. I had already been painting with coffee, literally, for a number of years but as I weaned myself off the stuff, I started not only painting with coffee, but also painting images of coffee. I also painted pictures of sweet, gooey cupcakes - b...

Looking Through It...

Image
Life is a whirlwind at the moment and between the sale of our house, the epic move, family visits and art show openings, I haven't had many days available for painting. However, I have been working on a new series of abstracts when time allows and I'm really excited to share them with you. These new pieces range in size from 4" x 4" to 12" x 12" and - as with all my abstracts - they are inspired by the land and sea. Hope you like them! ~Andrea

Cuttin', Pastin' and...

Image
by Andrea Mulder-Slater My dad and I shared a love of words… especially flowery, elaborate words. Though his vocabulary was far, far greater than mine, he always appreciated the bits of stuff I came up with and I always endeavored to understand the things he wrote. It was quite by chance that I decided to incorporate my father’s words into my latest works of art. Paper, canvas and glue are the media of choice for me at the moment, and as I began to work with these materials, the pieces begged for words. My dad wrote - a lot - and upon his death, left behind, oodles and oodles of words. I kind of like the idea of keeping his memory alive by, in a sense, illustrating some of his sentences. I plan on (at some point) using my own words in this new series I am working on – but for now, his just seem to fit. Galileo Galilei pursued an interest he had developed in natural motion and the behavior of bodies of water. Words by Henry Mulder, 1939-2009 | Art by andreams (Andre...

Getting back into the swing of things has been slow going, but I'm happy to be able to post a new painting. This one is of the Point in St. Andrews. It sold before it hung on the wall. It is small - 7" x 9" unframed size.
